Mellothrives on attention, positive or negative. The sounds of compliments from supporters or the disdain from haters drivesMelloto be the next big star fromChicagoto represent GMG.He got his start in music at young age. "It was fun, more like a hobby... I use to listen to a lot of people and write raps as if I was them. I got hooked into it." Out of this hobby, his talent would develop, people would begin to take notice and ignite his passion for rapping. "The people I was surrounded by was like 'Damn, you can rap', so eventually it started getting serious. It started to get addictive."Mello's uncle, a member of Twista'sLegit Ballerscrew, knew Twista personally and would invite the rapper over to his house. It was there thatMellogot to showcase his skills to Twista.A few years later, one ofMello's joints played at a strip club where Twista'smanager was at. Impressed by the single the manager contacted Twista to let him know about the hot artist, and then he calledMello.Mellodid not believe what was going on, and drove up to the strip club. Both he and Twista arrived at the club, and Twista was surprised to see that the man his manager was talking about wasMello. From then onMelloand Twista would cement their relationship asMellowould work with Twista and sign to the GMG label.

With hip hop screaming for help, the breath of fresh air Young R brings is such a relief. What’s great about Young R is that you will fall in love with his music and background. This amazing artist is a recent Engineering school graduate who is also working on getting an M.B.A and taking over the music industry at the same time. His music is electric. Every song sounds like he knew it would be his last. Born on January 28, 1988 in Macon, GA and raised in nearby Juliette, GA Young R is the voice of the yet to be respected Middle GA area as far as hip hop music.

In 2009 he recorded and released his most successful single to date Anotha Planet. Anotha Planet would spark millions of MySpace plays and YouTube Views, thousands of digital downloads and a business negotiation with Jive Records which would cause a verse from multi-platinum artist Lil-Wayne to be recorded for the song. Young R has also performed with numerous major artists ranging from Monica to the Plain White Ts. All this was done while being a full time student in engineering school. With a B.S in Industrial Management to fall back on he has his sights set on becoming a hip hop legend and mogul. In his own words, his goal is to prove that nice guys don’t finish last! Young R was also a recent finalist in the Georgia Lottery All Access Music Search. As a finalist, Young R was able to perform during halftime of the Atlanta Falcons vs. Green Bay Packers game in front of 70,000 people and also perform on national TV during the finale of the music search while being judged by major music industry names like Dallas Austin and Monica.

After getting into Hip-Hop around 1988, UK based Configa first saw his future in radio presenting his own show on a local unlicensed station, but ultimately the draw of the microphone proved too much and by the age of 16 he started writing rhymes under the pseudonym 'M.C. Unique'. After releasing various mixtapes on the underground as well as getting involved in local freestyle battles 'Unique' decided to build upon his buzz and release his debut album 'Baptizm Of Fire' in 2000. Aside from mic duties, the album was also self-produced/mixed/manufactured and financed by himself and the album featured a collaboration with B. Down the CEO of LA based 'Rap Junkie Records' who then signed 'Unique' to his label in 2001. 'M.C. Unique' went on to feature on two releases on the LA label, 'Independent Game 1' (2001) and 'Independent Game 2' (2002) and then released his second album, 'The King Of Linguistics' in 2002. The album was mainly self produced and gained favourable reviews and including a mention on MTV.com alongside the '8 Mile' Soundtrack and Christina Aguilera upon its release date and was distributed in Europe and all across North America.

In 2003 'M.C Unique' decided to take a back seat on mic duties and rebranded himself 'Configa' a new vibe where focused almost exclusively on production work . In 2004, Configa formed, along with Wargasms, Arsenal and C-Gully, the crew 'Slept On Fam' and went on to release the album 'Audio Crack' was released late 2006. The album received excellent reviews such as "What makes Configa so good?" Rapreviews.com, "Configa serves up the production crack for those audio canals" UKHH.com and Blues & Soul mentioning "Configa's stirring production". Slept On Fam then went on to win 'Group of The Year' in 2007 at the second annual 'Get 'Em Magazine' music awards in Florida hosted by the legendary boxer Roy Jones Jr, beating such luminaries as recent Oscar winners Three 6 Mafia. After a lengthy music hiatus where Configa had a weekly on-line radio show while getting his PhD on a thesis about hip hop and ethnicity, Configa released a 2Pac remix album entitled "Configa Presents...Pac To The Essence Vol. 1" in 2010 to mark the 14th year of 2Pac's passing.

Configa then set up his own independent record label Configaration Records and began work on his solo album entitled "Inside The Echo Chamber" which will be entirely produced by Configa alongside a host of different MC's guesting on the tracks. Notable confirmed guests so far include stateside legends Craig G, Chino XL, Nine and Kurtis Blow along with UK legend Scorzayzee and the album is due for release early 2012. In the meantime we have this brand new mixtape 'Calm Before The Storm' to keep us going! This is a twenty track collection of the underground's finest MC's spittin' flamez over his boom-bap driven beats. There are artists from both the UK and the USA on here and the music speaks for itself and all of the beats are original Configa compositions. This release stands alone by itself, with its strength and depth and is the perfect prelude to the album "Inside The Echo Chamber". Configa is about rhythmic "Golden Era Real Hip-Hop" with that unique head nodding instrumentation.

When it comes to independent grinding in the south, you have Artists and labels thats getting to the money. You have artist that eat, sleep, and live for this thing called Hip-Hop. In the streets of Louisiana you got to mention Monroe Louisiana's grinding son EssA. EssA has been grinding over 10 years in the music game. He started out as a DJ in Monroe under DJ Gentleman George doing live remotes for the Hip-Hop radio station in his hometown. He later did promotions for Hypnotized Minds, Dirty work Ent., now known as AFG Music, Short Stop Records "Lil Troy", and Ice Age Ent. (Mike Jones). While working with Houston's Lil Troy, EssA landed a deal with Universal/Bungalo Records. The CD release sold a few thousand units without proper promotions. EssA went on to drop an independent release titled "Gutta Life" that sold upwards of 10,000 plus units out the trunk and in various mom and pop stores in the south. The album featured Juvenile, Sam I Am, T-Bo, Baby Boy Da Prince, and contained a hot single titled "POP IT OFF" featuring New Orleans legend 5th Ward Weebie which gained him a big buzz and generated radio play throughout the state of Louisiana and Texas. Now after years of going through bad deals, and all the pit falls of life, EssA is still here grinding it out. "We out here grinding and finishing up my new release which is untitled at the moment." while chilling with EssA, he gave us a preview of his new CD and believe me THIS DUDE GOT HEAT! His lead single HATE ON is a anthem/club banger! While listening, I heard a very well rounded sound on his project, it's hood but mainstream. EssA states "That's what I tried to do on this project, make world music, something every hood and race could feel. Every race has money problems, life problems, day to day stress and I'm no different from any of them. I really put my heart and soul into this project so the world can see what's in my heart and that I'm just trying to provide for mines and give them good music. We're built for this!"

BIOGRAPHY
Gianni is from a middle class family residing mainly in the North west London area. He was schooled at the private school that is "John Lyon " in harrow and now attends "Woodhouse College" in Finchley studying Law , Theatre and Economics. Gianni fell in love with music after purchasing a cheap microphone from the high street brand that is Maplins. He then began recording bits and pieces and going to friends home studio set ups and eventually recorded his first mixtape. He then began doing little party sets and some club sets in his local areas and distributing mixtapes around but he hadn't really taken as a artist. So he took a break for a while to do GCSE's and other activities. But it was during this break he cut a deal with Superhuman ENT and some American producers (credits include Soulja Boy , Tyga , Gucci Mane, Chris Brown , Roscoe Dash) to give them the new exciting sound he now has. 2011 has taken off by storm for him, with over 30 shows played this year and most of his first album "Get signed or Sign on" recorded he is ready to give the world and starting with the UK a sample of what is yet to follow.

Fam Records Present West - Life In London (Produced by David The Producer)

For those of you that may not have heard about this talented urban songwriter and performer, let us take this opportunity to tell you about the man they call West. After getting into music at a very early age, West started performing by the age of five winning talent competitions and being picked for star roles in his school plays. As he naturally matured he began to decipher what styles of music he liked getting into various urban music sounds such as R'n'B, Hip-Hop & Jungle. It was this influx of inspiration that led to West picking up the pen, writing rap verses and sung hooks. Before long West went onto record a mixtapes worth of material on well known beats which led to him being asked to perform at open mic nights and get his name out locally.

In 2003 West auditioned for a singer/songwriting competition in Reading where me met the keyboard player who played on D'Angelo's 'Voodoo' album. He started working with him and wrote his first commercial song 'Take My Life'. He came second in the competition and went on to perform the song in various UK clubs including London's 'Popshow Party' in Soho supporting a girl group called 'Clea'. After this triumph, he worked with a few local producers and learnt how to play a few chords on the guitar and taught himself how to use programs such as Cubase & Reason. West then entered the BBC's talent show 'Pop Idol' getting through to the second round before entering the X-Factor to be told by Louis Walsh he 'should and could be a star'.

Since then it's been non-stop for West as he joined local reggae band Mighty Upfront as a singer and gained valuable experience playing live, as well as having a massive local following. Now teamed up with brand new record label and management company Fam Records, as well as enlisting the production skills of 'David The Producer', West is set for big things. There is no doubting that West has the raw talent, the vision and the skills to make a real impact and the fact that his material is refreshingly uplifting and positive, makes this artist a man to watch.

Here is West's first single to be promoted nationally and internationally, and it's a song that was actually written  back in 2007. The song talks on the different lives and issues regarding England 's capitol city  London, due to current events it seemed to be a good time to share this song with the world. The hearts of WEST and FAM records go out to all families affected. There is a lot more to come from West and Fam Records so be make sure you remember the name.

CITY BOY FT. DJ KHALED, ACE HOOD & RICH KIDD - I'M ON IT via @TrendsetterEnt

Posted Image

August 20th 2011 -- Although his moniker may not quite yet be a household name, make no mistakes because South Chicago, Illinois, resident emcee, City Boy, is definitely no stranger to Hip-Hop.
Having already logged in countless high profile collaborations with the likes of R.Kelly, Gorilla Zoe and Ray Lavender, to name a few, Chi-Town's own prodigal son is literally right on the cusp of taking the whole music world by storm.
On his latest, the raucous soon-to-be smash anthem, "I'm On It", City unites with New Orleans, Louisiana, by way of Miami, Florida, hit-maker, DJ Khaled, along with We The Best signees; Ace Hood and Rich Kidd. The stellar track is only a small taste of what all can actually be expected from his forthcoming, still untitled solo debut.
Currently, City Boy has a pair of popular mix-tape offerings; a collaborative effort with his very own M.M.G. [Millions Music Group] collective, as well as Time Is Money, hosted by the "Midwest Mixtape Bully" DJ V-Dub, now available online for free download, and is presently working on his highly anticipated third collection, I'm Die Getting Money.
"City Boy," featuring R.Kelly, can also be purchased on iTunes and other select digital outlets, while "I'm On It" is slated for release on Tuesday, September 13th 2011.

Accepting our present life situation is fundamental. Appreciating it is divine. ~ Allison Blankenship

Action Steps for Transcending Emotional Suffering
A specific action that will help you to be more accepting is to find and dissolve your core beliefs about how people should be. What conceptual idea is in your mind about how the world should be and when should it be that way? These artificial standards in the mind become the basis for judgment and emotional reactions. The second step is to become of aware of the emotions that these beliefs create. Becoming aware of the emotional pain born out of these beliefs will motivate you to suspend your belief in these artificial standards. In this process it may seem sensible to let go of our expectations for ourselves first. This is actually one of the hardest places to start. You may find it more productive if you begin with an inventory of expectations of other people.
This process can be humbling. When I challenged my own beliefs and break the cycle of my emotional reactions I realized how difficult it was to identify and change beliefs. Realizing the challenge helped me be more accepting of other people trapped in their own beliefs. I no longer expected them to change their emotional state simply with my suggestions. I knew that they would have to change their point of view and beliefs before their emotions could change. Sometimes the process can be quick; perhaps a wise teacher can help with a change of perspective. Other times what is called for is being present and unconditionally accepting for life as it is. As my awareness grew I became more accepting of all the different dimensions of life. I also became more humble as I let go of my personal agenda of how the world or people should be.
There is no difference between compassion and forgiveness. Both share an attitude of unconditional acceptance for a situation or person as they are without judgment or expectation of something else. When you forgive people you let go of your attachment to your expectations and wishes for something different. This is the same as actively accepting life as it is. When you forgive people and the world for whatever they will do in the future you will be accepting of them however they are. This act makes it possible to live without judgment and the resulting emotional reactions. In this way compassion for the world is the same as a complete act of forgiveness. This is the pathway to a happy and compassionate life.

Gage (of Click Animosity) - The Desolate Lands OUT NOW!!!

Final-coverdesolate500

Gage (of Click Animosity) - The Desolate Lands

"The Desolate Lands in my mind is a project I formulated in the mid 90's around 96. There are songs I recorded as a testament to that. It's basically a conceptual album, a "what if" the world went through some sort of catastrophic event like a global nuclear war, apocalyptic type thing. What's left after that? Not much, many deaths, a lot of sick people, some people who will try to take advantage of the situations etc. So The Conqueror is like the hero & a mercy killer in these days & times. I wanted this to be like a movie on disc or MP3's. Thanks to a lot of MC friends, DJ's & producers (especially DJ Extremidiz). We've crafted a project that I feel really hits the nail on the head & accomplished what we set out to do with this." - Gage

About Gage:

Gage got his start on the mic officially around 1994. Former member of the now defunct group V.H.S. Crew which consisted of Relm-1, Resek, Tizmoe (Trust), himself & others. Recently some of the material has been officially released from that era by Gage, Trust and with Relm's approval and artistic direction. That V.H.S. Crew - Tragic Outcome (Click Animosity origins Vol.1) can be purchased at Undergroundhiphopdotcom (Ughh) as a limited edition. Around 2007 Gage & Trust regrouped & formed Click Animosity & began almost immediately working on their debut album Feeders Of The Flamez which even without distribution was greeted with a very warm welcome and considered to be 1 of the best Hip Hop albums of 2010 by those lucky enough to have heard it.

Gage also has available his debut EP known as Dead Angel / The Gospel which was a total of 8 tracks with 3 original & 5 remixes. Feeders Of The Flamez & Dead Angel / The Gospel are currently available on iTunes , Amazon etc for download via Metal Barz Records (Dead Angel / The Gospel is known as Metal Barz #001 meaning 1st official release) . Metal Barz Records is headed by Canadian underground Hip Hop Producer DJ Extremidiz who many know for his work with Shabazz the Disciple on Metal Barz Records & many other Hip Hop veterans & legends. Gage & Click Animosity have also appeared on many compilations, mixtapes, radio shows & online radio shows. Click Animosity is Gage; Trust aka T.Izmoe & Rheto also from Evil Dead.

Gage & DJ Extremidiz wanted to bring a visual sound scape of a "What If" scenario , What if the Earth was all but destroyed by a cataclysmic event such as a series of nuclear attacks , Earth quakes , Tsunamis , or even an End Of Days type of scenario ? What would the world be like for those few who managed to survive such horrific events? Gage tackles the lyrical side of things with very vivid story telling & pains visual portraits while Dj Extremidiz and some other producers lend the grimey back ground for the sound track. The Desolate Lands is like an audio movie. "It's the post apocalyptic companion disc , besides clean water & safe shelter this is all you will need to survive" exclaims Gage jokingly yet with a serious face. Gage is the Conqueror on this project, less of Hip Hop purist & more of a new direction into the mind of 1 of Hip Hop's most sought after new comers.

REAL USA HIP-HOP - Rediculus Feat. Prome "Halo (Pain is Love)" first single from new Masters Of Conversation project

Rediculus Feat. Prome "Halo (Pain is Love)"

http://www.zshare.net/audio/9349150740605fc6/

Rediculus releases first single from new Masters Of Conversation project...

The talented producer from Chicago is releasing the first single from his new project to the thrill of his fans around the world.

Rediculus is preparing to release the next edition of his Masters of Conversation production series in September, quickly following up his critically acclaimed Walking Down Broken Paths instrumental album and marking the 4th edition of the production series.  Rediculus, who resides in Chicago, Illinois, has just put the final touches on the last mixes and is not preparing to delight his fans with his latest single which he hopes will expand his fan base and get his music heard by more people around the globe.

The single, "Halo (Pain is Love)", features a hard blaring horn sample with a neck snapping snare to drive the track and longtime collaborator and fellow Chicagoan Prome on the microphone dropping lyrical napalm on the track.

The album, "Masters of Conversation: Punchlines and Parables", is 16 tracks all produced by Rediculus and features some of hip hop's hottest MC's such as Chubb Rock, Ruste Juxx, Craig G, Sha Stimuli, Emilio Rojas, Koncept and the Audible Doctor from Brown bag All Stars, Big Dutty Deeze, Chaundon, Notoriety, Stumik Icewater, Sadat X, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Red Eye, Pair-a-Dyce and many more.

The album itself is both a return to the "Golden Era" and a glimpse into the future of hip hop.  Soulful samples scream and wail throughout the project, backed by growling bass lines and driving drum tracks with custom kicks and snares that showcase the wide variety of influences in Rediculus's life and music.

Rediculus is quoted as describing the project with the following statement; "This album is going to really make people think about what they listen to and show people that you can reach consumers without watering down our culture.  We have a host of people in the culture who are over 30 and want music that they can relate too, something with more substance that addresses the issues in their lives.  The current trend of making songs about negative images backed by empty music is coming to an end and this project should definitely help drive the nails into that coffin.  People want something smarter and I'm here to give it to them"

The album, set to be released on September 20th, will be distributed digitally globally by Island/Def Jam and will include several limited edition runs of physical copies, with a UK exclusive edition containing a few remixes Rediculus did for Big Dutty Deeze and American exclusive artwork for his US edition.

People are encouraged to follow Rediculus on Twitter, keep in touch with him on Facebook, check out his Bandcamp page and visit his website for more information and to keep up on the latest news with Rediculus and all of Knowledge Giving Birth Productions.

It only seems like five minutes ago that we were telling you about Sir Tomz's massive music video for 'The Struggle'. Well guess what? This Birmingham emcee, producer and CEO is back with his brand new music video which once again features the lush sung vocals of Nih illi and is directed, edited and produced by Peter Jordan from Auteurluirid.

With the recent events of the riots and looting in the UK it's been a time for reflection and deep thought for the whole population. It's a strange time here is the UK and there is no doubting that even those who thought there wasn't a government 'Lockdown' are now convinced there will be. This track is deeply lyrical and has a strong message as well as being delivered brilliantly over Ice Cube & Malay's massive 'You Know Me' beat.

Sir Tomz and his empire Jailhouse Ltd really are making moves and future releases already finished and now being scheduled for release the future looks bright. Please take note of this Midlands based outfit and show love and support wherever possible.

DJ Premier's artist... Nick Javas - Detour The Mixtape REAL HIP-HOP

Detour_front_cover_500

It's not everyday you come across raw talent, but here is an artist that really does have that original unique vibe that all of our favourite Hip-Hop stars have become famous for. Nick Javas is that man, he is that artist, that man who can put Hip-Hop back in check. In an era of blinged-out diluted gangsta rap, Nick Javas really is a breath of fresh air. Something authentic but not dated, something exciting but not dictated by swagger, this is real music with substance and integrity.

Nick Javas came to the attention of DJ Premier a couple of year's back who immediately signed him to his label before taking Nick Javas on his European tour. Nick Javas shared the stage with Premo & Royce da 5'9 at Fabric in London as well as featuring on BBC Radio with TimWestwood and featuring on Kiss FM DJ Shortee Blitz's mixtape "The Standard: Volume 2", as well as rocking a capacity crowd in Paris alongside Premo, Just Blaze & Alchemist. As well as being a great songwriter and recording artist, Nick Javas is also an exceptionally great performer. This really is raw talent in every shape and form!

You maybe remember the superb 'Material Girls' music video that was unleashed a couple of weeks back, well here is the full length debut mixtape. Featuring some brilliant production from the likes of 5th Seal, Versatile, J. Brown, M-Phazes and Josh Gotoy, this mixtape also includes some great freestyles. This official mixtape is something to keep us going until the album 'Destination Unknown' drops and what a treat it is too with guest features by Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg and the legendary DJ Premier, as well as Gist the Essence, Tony Brocc, Nicci Silva and Nikki Graffiti. This is a mixtape you need to download right now!!!

Nine Things Successful People Do Differently - Heidi Grant Halvorson - Harvard Business Review

Nine Things Successful People Do Differently - Heidi Grant Halvorson - Harvard Business Review

Why have you been so successful in reaching some of your goals, but not others? If you aren't sure, you are far from alone in your confusion. It turns out that even brilliant, highly accomplished people are pretty lousy when it comes to understanding why they succeed or fail. The intuitive answer — that you are born predisposed to certain talents and lacking in others — is really just one small piece of the puzzle. In fact, decades of research on achievement suggests that successful people reach their goals not simply because of who they are, but more often because of what they do.

1. Get specific. When you set yourself a goal, try to be as specific as possible. "Lose 5 pounds" is a better goal than "lose some weight," because it gives you a clear idea of what success looks like. Knowing exactly what you want to achieve keeps you motivated until you get there. Also, think about the specific actions that need to be taken to reach your goal. Just promising you'll "eat less" or "sleep more" is too vague — be clear and precise. "I'll be in bed by 10pm on weeknights" leaves no room for doubt about what you need to do, and whether or not you've actually done it.

2. Seize the moment to act on your goals.
Given how busy most of us are, and how many goals we are juggling at once, it's not surprising that we routinely miss opportunities to act on a goal because we simply fail to notice them. Did you really have no time to work out today? No chance at any point to return that phone call? Achieving your goal means grabbing hold of these opportunities before they slip through your fingers.

To seize the moment, decide when and where you will take each action you want to take, in advance. Again, be as specific as possible (e.g., "If it's Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, I'll work out for 30 minutes before work.") Studies show that this kind of planning will help your brain to detect and seize the opportunity when it arises, increasing your chances of success by roughly 300%.

3. Know exactly how far you have left to go. Achieving any goal also requires honest and regular monitoring of your progress — if not by others, then by you yourself. If you don't know how well you are doing, you can't adjust your behavior or your strategies accordingly. Check your progress frequently — weekly, or even daily, depending on the goal.

4. Be a realistic optimist.
When you are setting a goal, by all means engage in lots of positive thinking about how likely you are to achieve it. Believing in your ability to succeed is enormously helpful for creating and sustaining your motivation. But whatever you do, don't underestimate how difficult it will be to reach your goal. Most goals worth achieving require time, planning, effort, and persistence. Studies show that thinking things will come to you easily and effortlessly leaves you ill-prepared for the journey ahead, and significantly increases the odds of failure.

5. Focus on getting better, rather than being good.
Believing you have the ability to reach your goals is important, but so is believing you can get the ability. Many of us believe that our intelligence, our personality, and our physical aptitudes are fixed — that no matter what we do, we won't improve. As a result, we focus on goals that are all about proving ourselves, rather than developing and acquiring new skills.

Fortunately, decades of research suggest that the belief in fixed ability is completely wrong — abilities of all kinds are profoundly malleable. Embracing the fact that you can change will allow you to make better choices, and reach your fullest potential. People whose goals are about getting better, rather than being good, take difficulty in stride, and appreciate the journey as much as the destination.

6. Have grit.
Grit is a willingness to commit to long-term goals, and to persist in the face of difficulty. Studies show that gritty people obtain more education in their lifetime, and earn higher college GPAs. Grit predicts which cadets will stick out their first grueling year at West Point. In fact, grit even predicts which round contestants will make it to at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The good news is, if you aren't particularly gritty now, there is something you can do about it. People who lack grit more often than not believe that they just don't have the innate abilities successful people have. If that describes your own thinking .... well, there's no way to put this nicely: you are wrong. As I mentioned earlier, effort, planning, persistence, and good strategies are what it really takes to succeed. Embracing this knowledge will not only help you see yourself and your goals more accurately, but also do wonders for your grit.

7. Build your willpower muscle. Your self-control "muscle" is just like the other muscles in your body — when it doesn't get much exercise, it becomes weaker over time. But when you give it regular workouts by putting it to good use, it will grow stronger and stronger, and better able to help you successfully reach your goals.

To build willpower, take on a challenge that requires you to do something you'd honestly rather not do. Give up high-fat snacks, do 100 sit-ups a day, stand up straight when you catch yourself slouching, try to learn a new skill. When you find yourself wanting to give in, give up, or just not bother — don't. Start with just one activity, and make a plan for how you will deal with troubles when they occur ("If I have a craving for a snack, I will eat one piece of fresh or three pieces of dried fruit.") It will be hard in the beginning, but it will get easier, and that's the whole point. As your strength grows, you can take on more challenges and step-up your self-control workout.

8. Don't tempt fate. No matter how strong your willpower muscle becomes, it's important to always respect the fact that it is limited, and if you overtax it you will temporarily run out of steam. Don't try to take on two challenging tasks at once, if you can help it (like quitting smoking and dieting at the same time). And don't put yourself in harm's way — many people are overly-confident in their ability to resist temptation, and as a result they put themselves in situations where temptations abound. Successful people know not to make reaching a goal harder than it already is.

9. Focus on what you will do, not what you won't do. Do you want to successfully lose weight, quit smoking, or put a lid on your bad temper? Then plan how you will replace bad habits with good ones, rather than focusing only on the bad habits themselves. Research on thought suppression (e.g., "Don't think about white bears!") has shown that trying to avoid a thought makes it even more active in your mind. The same holds true when it comes to behavior — by trying not to engage in a bad habit, our habits get strengthened rather than broken.
If you want change your ways, ask yourself, What will I do instead? For example, if you are trying to gain control of your temper and stop flying off the handle, you might make a plan like "If I am starting to feel angry, then I will take three deep breaths to calm down." By using deep breathing as a replacement for giving in to your anger, your bad habit will get worn away over time until it disappears completely.

It is my hope that, after reading about the nine things successful people do differently, you have gained some insight into all the things you have been doing right all along. Even more important, I hope are able to identify the mistakes that have derailed you, and use that knowledge to your advantage from now on. Remember, you don't need to become a different person to become a more successful one. It's never what you are, but what you do.
